One hundred years ago, that 100 block of North Front Street was actually seen as several blocks with buildings being given the designation. And, while that practice has more or less disappeared, many of the names that helped make that area busy remain well known.
From State Street heading south down Front Street in the Sherman Block were Helm and Barnum Dry Goods, Klos Shoe Store, H.C. Grund Drug and the J. Youngman Cigars and Tobacco store, which also included the Joseph Bell newsstand and the Burt Hiett shoeshine stand. Youngman’s, of course, was the home of the city’s wooden Indian, affectionately known as Gloomy Gus.
