Although the actual "International Year of Peace" was 1986 this Sterling Silver (.925) Proof $1 "International Year of Peace" commemorative coin was re-issued by the RAM as part of the 1990 "Masterpieces in Silver - One Dollar Collection" set, along with two other silver proof one dollar commemorative coins. The Set was also issued separately at the Sydney ANDA Coin Fair. The set also included a 1 ounce Silver bar designed to resemble an Australian One Dollar Note.

The International Year of Peace was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1986 and this was celebrated in Australia when the RAM issued a circulating aluminium-bronze one dollar design featuring a peace dove, hands and a wreath. These iconic peace symbols incorporated into the design put forward the values of the United Nations to continue peace efforts worldwide as not only an achievement but a continuing goal.
