Royal Australian Mint, Canberra, Australia (1965-date)

The Royal Australian Mint have released a set of seven NCLT "Ford High Octane" 50 cent coins to commemorate Australia's Motorsport Legends. The coins were available in coin cards in a special tin that resembles the top of the cylinder head of an engine. The "Ford High Octane" tin was limited to a mintage of 10,000 and sold out from the RAM in less than 2 days.

Included in the tin was a non-coloured coin unique to the tin as well as the other six pad printed coins which could also be purchased separately with a further 20,000 minted of them all issued in large coincards.

This particular coin is the fifth in the series  and commemorates the 1981 XD Ford Falcon Tru-Blu. Australia's idea of a 'fair go' was rewarded in 1981. when Queenslander Dick Johnson took victory in his 'Tru-Blu' XD Falcon, with co-driver John 'Rusty' French. Having suffered the indignation of 'The Rock' incident the previous year, the struggling Johnson had taken the fight to the big budget dominance of the Holden Dealer Team, and his stolen victory tugged at the heartstrings of Australian racing fans. Johnson's pouring out of emotion saw a flood of donations even before the end of the 1980 race in which it happened. He rewarded their generosity not only with the 1981 Bathurst triumph, but also in winning the first of what would be five touring car titles. The 'Tru-Blu' Falcon, and Johnson, became motorsport legends in the process.

This coin was also released by Australia Post in a PNC. (7,500 Copies)
