Comments

The Royal Australian Mint in conjunction with some Australian Newspapers released this NCLT coin as part of a 15 coin set in October/November 2018. The first coin came with a large folding album and the coins were issued in coincards. The series is called "Anzac Spirit - Values that Defined our Nation".

To get a coin you had to obtain a paper token from the newspaper and redeem it at a cost of $3.00. Different tokens were published each day for just over 2 weeks (hence 15 coins).
Eleven of the 15 coins released in the series are 20 cent coins and four of them are 50 cent coins. They were issued in a collector coin card. This 20 Cent coin is not meant for circulation however it is legal tender.

This particular coin refers to the Brave Value.  Fifty-three Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross on the Western front. There are repeated examples in Australian citations for bravery awards where the courageous actions of an individual provided inspiration or leadership to their group. For example, Corporal "Snowy" Howel fought a one-man action at Bullecourt in May 1917, holding off the enemy with bombs and bayonet, until he was severely wounded.  His action "was witnessed by the whole battalion and greatly inspired them in the subsequently successful counter attack" - and he later met King George as pictured on this coin.
