Comments

This unofficial 2019 eight-sided 5 Maray coin was issued for the Australian island of Tasmania. The obverse depicts a Tasmanian aborigine, a kangaroo and the Southern Cross from the Australian flag. The reverse features a Tasmanian Devil. The Tasmanian aborigines were largely wiped out by disease after the British settled in Tasmania. There are ongoing disputes about who, if anyone, can claim to be of Tasmanian aboriginal descent. The Tasmanian Devil is an endangered species due to a rapidly spreading facial tumor disease. The denomination Maray refers to a type of herring found off the coast of Tasmania. The 40mm silver-plated proof coin has a mintage of only 150 pieces.
