The Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to a great variety of marine life.
The world-famous Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest coral reef on Earth and one of the Seven Wonders of Nature. It can be seen from space with the naked eye and consists of more than 3,000 individual reef systems and hundreds of tropical islands. Unfortunately, the reef keeps losing more and more corals and has become an endangered ecosystem. The main reasons for this include global warming, as well as the acidification of the oceans.
The Great Barrier Reef deserves protection not only because of its corals but also because the rich marine fauna that lives there. Each year, the underwater world attracts millions of tourists. This silver plated, partially colored copper coin shows a small portion of the fascinating sea creatures of the reef.
