Mitad del Mundo is a monument located at the equatorial line, near the city of San Antonio, in the canton of Quito. The 30-metre-tall (98 ft) monument was built between 1979 and 1982 to commemorate the first Geodesic Mission of the French Academy of Sciences. The Mission started in 1736 and the group conducted experiments to test the flattening at the poles of the characteristic shape of the Earth, by comparing the distance between a degree meridian in the equatorial zone to another level measured in Sweden.
