Comments

Based on the letter of Toscanelli, and his map showing the route to Orient crossing Atlantic ocean, Columbus planned his trip to Catay and Cipango (China and Japan). That map was based upon the calculations of Ptolemy, that had big mistakes on distances, ending on an esteemed position of Orient, much shorter than real, cause he esteemed the diameter of Earth as 29 000 km instead of the real 40 000.

VARIANTS:
There are two obverse variants: the older style, where the coat of arms has plain strips on left side, and the wreath is thin; and the newer one where the strips are reeded and the wreath is thick.
