Discovered on 5 February 1869 near the Victorian goldfields town of Moliagul, the world-famous "Welcome Stranger" nugget weighed an estimated 72 kilos and contained almost 2,300 ounces of gold. It sold for 10,000 British pounds, the equivalent of millions of dollars today. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of its discovery, this attractive quality coin features a design highlighting the Australia's largest known alluvial gold nugget in the precious metal.
The coin includes a representation of Stuart Devlin’s depiction of the Welcome Stranger gold nugget as it appeared in The Perth Mint’s 1986 Australian Nugget 1oz gold coin with the inscription ‘WELCOME STRANGER 1869’ and ‘AUSTRALIAN NUGGET’. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the 2019 year-date, and the coin’s weight and fineness are also included in the reverse design.
