Reverse

Floriate cross.

Mint

Middelburg, Netherlands (1100-1798)

Comments

Known as Kleine denarius (dutch).

Though the later copper maille was valued lower, the silver maille issued in circa 1168-1300 had a silver content comparable to the french denier.
Ghyssens (1971) attributed this type to Saint-Omer, Tournai, or Middelburg, but more recent research gives a most likely attribution of Middelburg.
