Comments

Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu, * 1654, † 1714, ruled a relatively weak principality, which was surrounded by strong powers. Outside, he submitted to the Turks, but operated a dangerous double game behind the scenes and negotiated with both the Russian tsar and the Habsburg emperor. When the Ottoman diplomats found out, the Sultan had Prince Constantin and his sons arrested during their stay in Istanbul. Since the prince refused to give up his belief and convert to Islam, he was executed with his family.
