Comments

The Canso Causeway joins mainland Nova Scotia to Cape Breton Island via the Trans-Canada Highway. Its construction was completed on April 13, 1955 and the causeway officially opened August 13, 1955.

Initial tolls were 75 cents each way. Tokens were issued for the 25th anniversary of the causeway in 1980 and tolls became one-way; to enter the island. Class 2 tokens were $1.50 each or $5.00 for a bag of twenty-five. Tolls were collected until December 13, 1991.

The word "canso" is believed to be derived from the Mi'kmaq word "kamsok" which means "opposite the lofty cliffs". These tokens paid for the 23 million dollar cost of construction. There are 6 known varieties.
