Comments

According to "Banco de México" and "Diario oficial de la Federación" (Federation's Official Log), coins from 1987 had several inconsistencies, such as defective alloy which caused the coin's design to change when struck. This was detected at the mint, and most of the near 82 million coins were rejected and destroyed before leaving the mint. Only the final batches with the corrected alloy reached the public. An estimate is that only 1% of 1987 5 peso coins ever circulated. There were still a large number of coins that reached circulation (almost a million), but when compared to the over 100 million coins from the other two years, they certainly become scarce and rare to find.
