Comments

Here is the reverse image of a 1954 coin with font size differences from the 1956 shown above. Most noticeable is the "LEMPIRA" is smaller and further away from the ring around the lettering. I found a dozen coin images and the font size seems consistent for 1954 and for 1956.

For the 1956 dated coins, 7,664,000 were minted in 1956 and 12,336,000 were minted in 1957. The 1956 and 1957 issues are indistinguishable from each other.

1. Lempira, the present currency of Honduras, was introduced in 1931 replacing the Peso. The Lempira is divided into 100 Centavos.

The currency is named after Lempira, a chieftain of the indigenous Lenca people, who waged war against Spanish occupation of the country during the 16th century. He is revered as a national hero.

2. Sept. 15, 1821, within the Coat of Arms commemorates the day when 5 Central American countries including Honduras gained independence from Spanish rule. 15th Sept is celebrated as the National Day of Honduras.
