PALM BEACH KIWANIS CLUB BICENTENNIAL SAND DOLLAR SOUVENIR COIN The Kiwanis club of Palm Beach issued the first SAND DOLLAR souvenir coin in 1972. The coins were sold inthe lobby of the First National Bank in Palm Beach and the proceeds from the sale of these coins went to various charities. The coin value of $1.00 was honored by various merchants and the limited time for their use was shown on the coin. Reference to the first sand dollar coin can be found in the Palm Beach Daily News article dated April 20, 1972. The designer was Edward Grove whose initials ERG appear on the front of the coin. Edwatd Grove once again designed a SAND DOLLAR COIN this time for the bicentennial 1776-1976 featuring an American Eagle head on the front of a brilliant silver finish metal coin. Once again his initials ERG appear on the front. The back has a sand dollar with ONE DOLLAR printed in the center and and ON OR BEFORE JULY 4, 1977 indicating the time limit of use.
