Comments

One of the first coins struck for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The law of January 9, 1852, orders the manufacture of these coins and fixes its alloy at 95 hundredths of copper, 4 hundredths of tin and 1 hundredth of zinc. Coin quite common (except the year 1870 without point), but difficult to find in a state higher than Very Fine.

Mint marks on the right:

Type 1 (KM # 23.1), struck at the Brussels mint, shows strangely the caduceus of the Utrecht mint and the Roman sword of its director, Mr. van der Wall Blake. This error, previously made by Norbert Metz, was followed by a letter of protest from the Dutch Minister at the time of the Luxembourg Minister of Finance. Notwithstanding the admitted error, we find the same marks unduly on the mintages of 1870. Consult the sheet of the 5 centimes KM#22 for more information about this.

Type 2 (KM#23.2), struck at the Paris mint in 1855 and 1860, displays the anchor of the general engraver, M Désiré-Albert Barre and the hand mark of Mr. Charles-Louis Dierickx, Director of the Paris Mint.

Type 3 (KM#23.2), also struck in Paris shows the bee, mark of Alfred Renouard de Bussière, mint director at the time.

Mint mark on the reverse

The years struck at the Paris mint (1855, 1860, 1865) bear the letter A above the name of the engraver. The 1855 year also exists without the mintmark A - very rare (L#264-3). The year 1854 has no mark on the reverse. And the coin minted in 1870 exists with point and without point, the point-less version being much less common.

Varieties on the level of mint marks:
Several punches were used for minting which sometimes causes changes in position of mint marks.
Example for the right:

On the reverse side we can observe different positions for the date, the signature of the
engraver and point of the mint year 1870:

The withdrawal of this type was ordered by the decree of March 28, 1901 and the public notice of August 17, 1901. The demonetized coins were used to cast the bronze relief plan of the fortress of the city of Luxembourg. (see Supplement to the catalog of Luxembourg currencies, page 198, by R. Weiller, published in 1995 by the Belgian Review of Numismatics)
