Comments

From the Reserve Bank of New Zealand website, on the significance of the design: "Koruru feature particularly strongly at the apex of the gable of a large carved house that was symbolic of the face of an important Māori ancestor from that part of the country. This particular koruru was designed by Mr James Berry specifically for use on New Zealand currency and is representative of designs from various regions."

In 2004 the Royal Dutch Mint issued a Set of New Zealand coins from 5 cent to $2. This is known as the Oceania Set. The set included the rare 2004 10 cent/$1 Mule coin.

The 10 cent coin of this size and composition was first issued into circulation in New Zealand in 1967. In 2006 The Reserve Bank of NZ & the NZ Post Office issued a Limited Edition special set of coins called "Small Change Smaller Change" to celebrate the redesign of the 10 cent coin and the 20 & 50 cent coins and the removal of the 5 cent coin from circulation.

Reports have been received regarding a 2004 10 cent mule where the obverse has been struck with the NZ $1 dollar die which has a slightly smaller diameter causing the border/rim to be slightly thicker than a normal coin:
