Christian Gobrecht was the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1840 until his death in 1844. He was responsible for designing the famous "Seated Liberty" designs, which were in turn the direct inspiration for the design of the Trade Dollar.

The standard weight of this coin was 129 grains.
In 1839 the mint mark, if present, was on the obverse.  It was moved to the reverse in 1840.
In 1840 the diameter was changed from 22.5 mm to 21.6 mm.  All other standards remained the same.  Some of the 1840 coins minted in Philadelphia were the large diameter and some the small diameter.
