Amazonia is a fantasy nation that is made up of vast Amazon rain forest that encompasses much of Brazil as
well as parts of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. This 2012 dated eight coin set features a variety of birds, wildlife
and fish on the obverse of each coin. The reverse of all the coins depict a map of Amazonia, along with the
Portuguese legend "Pulmao do Mundo" or "Lung of the World", a reference to the large amount of oxygen that
is given off and carbon dioxide that is absorbed by the vast rain forest. A Chinese River Dolphin (Lipotes
vexillifer) is on the 10 Reis. I suspect it was supposed to be the Amazon River Dolphin, but the coin designer
depicted the wrong dolphin. A Black-Headed Spider Monkey is on the 20 Reis. A Parrot is on the 40
Reis. The 80 Reis pictures a Piranha. A Ranitomeya amazonica, which is a poison dart frog, is on the 100
Reis. An Anaconda is on the bimetallic 200 Reis. The bimetallic 300 Reis features a Capybara, which is the
largest rodent in the world. A Keel-billed Toucan is on the bimetallic 400 Reis. The 2012 dated coins range in
size from 15mm to 32mm.
