Comments

The reverse design is not well understood. According to Millies (1871:105-106), some interpret them as stylized sabers from the Aceh flag while some view them as stylized letters, possibly مصروف maṣruf "money of exchange" from root word صرف. The former interpretation is repeated in Singh (1986:538) and the latter in Gumilar (2021:8).

The inscribed years correspond to the reign of Alauddin Sulaiman Ali Iskandar Syah (1838–1857) in the Aceh Sultanate. However, his reign was largely nominal as de facto power was held by Alauddin Ibrahim Mansur Syah, who would later reign formally from 1857 to 1870.
