The RAM released this Fine Silver (.999) coin in a capsule in a small plush case with limited edition certificate.
It commemorates the Royal Visit to Australia of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in the year 2000.
Just over 5 million Copper-nickel versions of the coin were released into circulation.
A fact to note about this coin is its obverse design. It is an entirely different design to all other effigies on Australian decimal currency up to that point. In 1996 the RAM was invited to submit designs for an update to the portrait of Her Majesty on the obverse of Commonwealth coinage. The RAM's in house designer at the time Vladimir Gottwald submitted his design and was among the final 3 viewed by the Queen herself for approval. Although the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy was chosen instead, Gottwald's design was approved for a one time striking on this 2000 Royal Visit 50 cent commemorative coin issued into circulation and on this silver coin.
Update - The Vladimir Gottwald 5th Effigy has now been re-issued on a commemorative $1 coin in 2019 as part of the Effigies Through Time six coin set.
Update - It has also been re-used on a 50 cent coin in the 50 Years of the Duodecagonal 50 Cent Coin 5 coin set.
