Emperor Franz Joseph I died on 21 November 1916, and was succeeded by Karl I. Previous version of this medal, with the image of Emperor Fraz Joseph I was awarded until April 1917.
On April 4, 1917, Prof. Heinrich Kautsch minted a new Medal for Bravery with the image of the young Emperor Karl I. This medal was minted in Vienna and Kremnica (now Slovakia).
