The Lewis & Clark expedition joint Saint Charles (Missouri) to the Pacific for the first time by land in 1804-06. A key participant to the expedition, the Indian woman Sacagawea, is honored on a 2000 one dollar coin http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces923.html.
