Obverse

Riga's coat of arms, which was adopted in 1925, is featured in the centre of the coin. The year 1998, numeral 10 and inscription LATU (lats) are placed beneath the motif.

Jānis Strupulis (monogram JS), born 1949 in Vacpiebalga, is a Latvian sculptor and graphical designer, who designed some of the modern Latvian coins with denominations in Latvian lats.

Designer: Laimonis Šēnbergs

Laimonis Šēnbergs (31 March 1947, Jaunpiebalga) is a Latvian poster and graphic designer. He has been an artistic advisor to the Bank of Latvia since 1993 and, since 2003, chairman of the State Commission for Heraldry of the Republic of Latvia. Laimonis Šēnbergs designed several coins for the Bank of Latvia. His best-known designs are the Latvian euro coins.

Reverse

The statue of Liberty, which tops the Freedom Monument, is depicted in the centre of the coin. The inscriptions BRIVIBAS PIEMINEKLIS (Freedom Monument) and LATVIJAS VALSTS XX GS. (State of Latvia 20th century), each arranged in a semicircle, are placed to the left and to the right of the central motif, respectively. The inscription RIGA-800 is placed beneath the motif.
