Designer: Raphael David Maklouf

Raphael David Maklouf is a sculptor, best known for designing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II used on the coins of many Commonwealth nations. Maklouf was born in Jerusalem emigrating with his family to the United Kingdom after the Second World War. He attended the Camberwell School of Art until 1958, afterward becoming an academic lecturer for ten years. He was made an Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1979. Raphael Maklouf was born to a Jewish family. His father is Samuel Maklouf, born in Safed, Raphael Makouf's mother is Leonie Maklouf.

Reginald George James Berry OBE was a New Zealand artist, noted for creating a large number of postage stamp and coin designs. He was born in London in 1906, and emigrated to New Zealand in 1925.

Comments

The tuatara is a native lizard to New Zealand and one of the oldest of all living reptiles. It grows up to 0.6m in length and can be traced back 180 million years. The tuatara has been given special protection by an Act of Parliament.

The 1998 Set Coins were minted in South Africa.

Die A - 5 weak waves at left side, the triangle of tail under the chin consists of separate scales.
Die B - similar to A, the scales in the triangle reengraved. It is easy to distinguish it by an additional scale at the top of the triangle.
Die C - 7 enhanced waves, the triangle of tail under the chin consists of separate scales.
Die D - 5 enhanced waves, the triangle of tail under the chin consists of undivided scales.
