Comments

Struck in the Indonesian National Mint, Jakarta.

Recently there was a move made by The Indonesia Central Bank to withdraw 1993 the Rp 1000 bimetal coins from circulation in Dec 2023. It is nothing unusual about such move in the past , but The Central Bank did not offer much details other than the coin is still valid for exchange with equal amount with the  current Rp 1000 banknotes  for the next 10 years. This had created speculators to sell out the coins on sale at the price tag of USD 6000 per coin. However , the Central Bank did not condone nor condemn such rife speculation among  the public. Yet, as everything in this country , there is always a grain of truth and mystery to such move, it will never be known to the public. Perhaps just perhaps , once the dust are settled down, the withdrawal may exceed not only those minted in 1993 but may cover the rest of the remaining coins in current circulation. There  may be an economic reason for doing so , as time goes by those base metal used in this bimetal coin may exceed its nominal value.  Again , such move will create further mystery to the existence of this coin for years to come.
