Comments

In 2008 the Royal Australian Mint introduced a new series of NCLT one dollar coins dedicated to Inspirational Australians. The fifth coin released and dated 2012 was issued in an unusual shaped Coincard.

This fifth coin recognises and honours Sir Douglas Mawson. Mawson is well known for pioneering Antarctic exploration as he led the Australasian Antarctic expedition in 1911, which was the first major scientific and geological study of this continent. This was the most famous undertaking by the explorer, scientist, geologist and university professor in a life dedicated to science.

The coin was also the only coin in the Inspirational Australian's series to be released in a PNC by Australia Post.
