Comments

1 kirobo is equivalent to 1/4 Ariary or 1.25 Francs.

In 1886, the Hova government reached an agreement with the English firm Kingdon to produce 50,000 piastres, but the deal fell through when the French Resident Le Myre de Vilers ordered new coins from the Monnaie de Paris. In fact, there are two strikes, in 1886 and 1888. A 5-franc silver coin (37mm) and a 1-franc silver coin (diam. 24mm). Both coins were designed by Ramanan-Kirahina, the Queen's designer and a former student at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1889, negotiations resumed between the Malagasy government and a French engineer, M. Rigaud. The contract was for 2 million silver coins, but could not be realized, although samples had been struck at the Monnaie de Paris. The poverty of the Malagasy treasury totally prevented this idea from coming to fruition.
