Engraver: Raphael David Maklouf

Raphael David Maklouf is a sculptor, best known for designing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II used on the coins of many Commonwealth nations. Maklouf was born in Jerusalem emigrating with his family to the United Kingdom after the Second World War. He attended the Camberwell School of Art until 1958, afterward becoming an academic lecturer for ten years. He was made an Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1979. Raphael Maklouf was born to a Jewish family. His father is Samuel Maklouf, born in Safed, Raphael Makouf's mother is Leonie Maklouf.

Stuart Leslie Devlin, AO, CMG is a significant contemporary gold and silversmith. Australian-born, he has designed coins for countries around the world, and became especially well known as London-based designer of gold and silver collector's items in the 1970s and 80s.

This Sterling Silver (.925) NCLT Proof coin was issued as part of the 1989 Fifty Cent Collection Masterpieces in Silver Set with four other Sterling Silver Proof 50 cent coins.



The coins in the set were all 1989 dated versions of previously released commemorative 50 cent coins that had been released into circulation they were :-

A 50 cent coin featuring the special reverse face for the Captain Cook Bicentenary year of 1970.
A 50 cent coin featuring the special reverse face for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.
A 50 cent coin featuring the special reverse face celebrating of the marriage of Charles and Diana in 1981
This 50 cent coin featuring the special reverse face for the Brisbane Commonwealth Games of 1982.
A 50 cent coin featuring the special reverse face for the Bicentennial Year 1988.

Over 49 million Copper-nickel versions of this 50 cent coin were released into circulation and included in the UNC and Proof Year sets for 1982. (However they had the Arnold Machin 2nd Portrait of QE II)
