A series of 3 silver and 4 gold coins were produced in AH1391-1971 and are inscribed "State of Oman". These were issued by the exile government of Imam Ghalib bin Ali in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and were distributed from a post box in Amman, Jordan. The Imamate had enjoyed effective autonomy in the interior of Oman between 1920-1954, at which time the Sultan resumed direct control. Imamist forces in Oman were finally driven out in 1959. The Imam has been in exile since 1955.
Imam Ghalib continued to receive many visitors from Oman up until his death, and was deeply respected by the people of Oman. He died on 29 November 2009.
