As the world turned its attention to Brazil for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, our famous loonie is back, sporting a design to express pride in Canada's athletes and to cheer them on. Available for a limited time, this sealed keepsake is the perfect way to celebrate a Canadian tradition and stand with our athletes as they compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In what is now a legendary tale, a Loonie was embedded at center ice before the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City to bring luck to Canada's men's and women's hockey teams. Both brought home gold.
Since then, the Royal Canadian Mint has released a Lucky Loonie for every Olympic and Paralympic Games. And this year, every Canadian athlete competing in Rio will receive one of their own. The 2016 Lucky Loonie $1 coin is a symbol that unites us from coast to coast to coast. It encourages us to stand with our athletes – to cheer – together as Canadians.
