Comments

The difference between "large" coat of arms (KM# 247) and "small" (KM# 260) in the 1973 mintage is very hard to see in the naked eye. A better clue is to check the size of the letters, where big letters (small space between the text and the edge) would mean "large coat of arms", and vice versa.

1970. There are at least 2 varieties in date. They are easy to distinguish by numeral '9'.
Die 1: top of 9 is above the level of tops 1-7.
Die 2: top of 9 is under the level of tops 1-7.

Coins of 1968 with JAS on obverse:
The book "Monedas Fiduciarias del Perú" by Francisco Yabar says that these letters are the initials of an official of the Lima Mint - José Alvarez Segura. The engraver made few coins with these letters as a present to this official. They are not known to have circulated.
