Comments

The Central African red colobus monkey lives in the tropical rain forest in larger groups of up to 50 monkeys. The group constellations are quite flexible, wherein individual monkeys between the groups change, especially during their formative years. Therefore, not all individuals of a group are directly related. In most cases, the females outnumber the much larger males. The males can be up to 11 kg in weight, and the younger males often form smaller Bachelor groups. Access to the best food sources and the mating opportunities are determined by a strong hierarchy that exists within each group. Every two years, the females give birth to offspring.

The red colobus monkeys use their long tail for balance while they swing through the treetops on the lookout for food in the form of leaves or fruits. This monkey species is very sensitive to disturbances, hunting and loss of habitat. Their natural predators include eagles, leopards and surprisingly chimpanzees, which probably exert the greatest influence on the red colobus monkeys anywhere the two species coexist.
