Engraver: Raphael David Maklouf

Raphael David Maklouf is a sculptor, best known for designing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II used on the coins of many Commonwealth nations. Maklouf was born in Jerusalem emigrating with his family to the United Kingdom after the Second World War. He attended the Camberwell School of Art until 1958, afterward becoming an academic lecturer for ten years. He was made an Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1979. Raphael Maklouf was born to a Jewish family. His father is Samuel Maklouf, born in Safed, Raphael Makouf's mother is Leonie Maklouf.

This coin was released as a joint collaboration between the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint to celebrate the holding of the XXVII Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia in the year 2000. This is coin 1 in a set of 28 that depict all 28 sports held at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Coins were all dated 2000 but were released between 1997 and 2000. Some were available separately and some were only available in a set of the full 28 coins in a special album. Interestingly some had the Maklouf Obverse and some had the Rank-Broadly Obverse.



Coin 1 represents Athletics - The heroes of Nations are made on field and track and in the field of the Olympic Games, including the Marathon - the event which best encapsulates the Olympic spirit, both ancient and modern.

Full metal composition is (Cu 92%, Al 6%, Ni 2%).

This particular coin was also released in an Australia Post PNC. (27,209 Copies)
