From the 8th century BC, Phoenicians founded several cities and strongholds on strategic points in the south and west of Sardinia. The island came under Carthaginian dominance around 510 BC, after an unsuccessful attempt in 540 BC. In 238 BC, following the First Punic War, the Romans took over the whole island, incorporating it into the province of Corsica et Sardinia.
