Coins from Qart Hadasht

The ancient settlement of Mastia, was founded by the Tartessians on the site of modern-day Cartagena, in the Region of Murcia, by the Mediterranean coast in south-eastern Spain. Mastia had one of the best harbors in the Western Mediterranean in the 3rd Century BC. Carthaginian general Hasdrubal the Fair established his base here in 228 BC and renamed the city to Qart Hadasht ("New City"), a name identical to the punic name of Carthage. Qart Hadasht served as a stepping-off point for the conquest of Spain. The Roman general Scipio Africanus conquered it in 209 BC and renamed it as Carthago Nova (literally "New City") to distinguish it from the mother city of Carthage.
