Qatar is an emirate on the Persian Gulf, bordering Saudi Arabia. In the 1950's the oil industry started to develop rapidly and funded the modernisation of Qatar. The British announced in 1968 to grant independence for all the Gulf emirates in 1971 and despite efforts to unify all of these Qatar walked out and went its own way.
