Rhodesia, named after Cecil John Rhodes by Queen Victoria, was an unrecognized country in southern Africa and was unilaterally declared on 11 November 1965, lasting till 30 May 1979. It was an area equivalent to modern Zimbabwe, 390,580 km² (150,800 square miles) with the capital of Salisbury (today Harare) and in a census in 1978 showed a population of 6,9 million people. Rhodesia followed on the dissolution of Rhodesia Nyasaland, a self-governing State from 1953 to 1963. It is landlocked country bordered by South Africa to the south, Bechuanaland (later Botswana) to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east. The first coins were issued in 1964, converting from Pound Sterling (as was used by Rhodesia Nyasaland and Southern Rhodesia before that) to Dollar and Cents. As such, the coins issued in 1964 show the conversion. Full fledges cent coins were issued from 1970 to 1977, with 100 Cents making a Dollar. At the beginning, 1964 to 1966, the coins depicted a bust of Queen Elizabeth II, but in 1970 changed to the Coat of Arms. Over its entire existence, the country was ruled by one person, the Prime Minister Ian Smith.
