After a civil war within the Principality of Benevento, the Principality of Salerno emerged, officially splitting from Benevento in 851. While Salerno remained quite wealthy and prosperous, under Gisulf II (1052-1077), the Principality's power declined. In 1077, the city of Salerno was lost in a siege, and the Principality soon after merged with the Duchy of Apulia and Calabria. Read more
