Coins from the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg

The House of Saxe-Gotha goes back to Duke Ernest I (1601-1675), younger son of Duke John II of Saxe-Weimar, who was first Duke of Saxe-Gotha (Saxe-New-Gotha) after an inheritance division in 1640. In 1672, the line of Saxe-Altenburg dies out and its assets essentially pass to Ernest I: thus was born the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. After the extinction of the Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg line in 1825, the duchy was divided between Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Saxe-Hildburghausen which became the newly created Saxe-Altenburg.
