Coins from Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt

The County of Schwarzburg was founded in the 12th century by Sizzo I, at a time when this area was contested between the Holy Roman Empire and Polish dukes. In 1599 the county was split among two brothers. One was known as Schwarzburg-Sondershousen, the other as Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Their locations were in present-day Thuringia, which was a myriad of German states. They became principalities in 1697 and 1711 respectively. Despite their small size they remained independent until they joined the German Empire in 1871 and their monarchies lasted until 1918.
