Banknotes from Singapore

Singapore is a city state on an island at the tip of the Malay Peninsula in South East Asia. It lies on the very strategic shipping route named The Straits. Founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles, it's free trading status made it a popular port, with East India Company funding until it became a Crown Colony in 1867. It became a British naval base in the 1920s, but it fell to Japan in WWII in 1942. Upon liberation in 1945, decolonisation saw the eventual independence of the British colonies as the Federation of Malaysia in 1963; but Singapore was expelled in 1965, becoming it's own nation state and an economic success in the later 20th century. As of 2018, Singapore's population is 5.5 million packed on just 278 square miles. It uses the Singapore Dollar.
