The county of Königstein is a territory of the Holy Roman Empire. On August 6, 1505, the brothers Eberhard, George and Philip, of the house of Eppstein, lords of Königstein, Eppstein and Münzenberg, received from Maximilian I the right to use the title of Count of Königstein. But the three brothers remained without male descendants, so that Eberhard IV named Louis, the son of his sister Anna married to Botho of Stolberg, as universal heir in his will. The latter had no male descendants either, which is why his brother Christopher of Stolberg inherited the estate.
