Coins from the County of Tassarolo

CoinsItalyItalian states › County of Tassarolo

The county of Tassarolo was an imperial fiefdom from 1560 to 1736, ruled by the Spinola di Luccoli family. The small town, today in the province of Alessandria, is located on the hilly ends of the Ligurian Apennines, in a strategic area between the Duchy of Savoy, Monferrato and the republic of Genoa. From 1736 to 1797 it enjoyed autonomy under the Savoy family. In 1815, it was incorporated in the Duchy of Savoy. The state also ran an active mint. The first coins were minted in 1604 at the behest of Count Augustine I Spinola (1604-1616). The last coins were minted in 1688 with the effigies of Philip and Livia Centurioni.
