Coins from Utica

Utica was an ancient Phoenician and Carthaginian city located near the outflow of the Medjerda River into the Mediterranean. It is traditionally considered to be the first Phoenician colony in North Africa. Utica used mostly coins issued by Carthage, and occasionally Numidian coinage. The only coins known to be minted in Utica are just before the 2nd Punic war, when Utica defied Carthage, made an alliance with Rome and issued its own coins in Roman style.
