Looking for (online) resources regarding coins of the Russian Empire

8 posts • viewed 151 times
Hello!

Recently I've gained an interest towards coins from the Russian Empire. It's become pretty clear that Russian coins are often counterfeited and that obviously makes me quite nervous as I do most of my coin purchases online. I would be interested in finding resources regarding coins of the Russian Empire to educate myself better and possibly learning to identify counterfeit coins more easily. I found this site: http://numistika.com/counterfeit.html but it doesn't have pictures of coins from 1742 and up (at least anywhere I looked).

Any tips are highly appreciated! I would prefer online resources but books are not out of the question, I would just have to be extremely lucky to be able to find those books from a library in my country.
Hello,

Numista has quite nice catalogue of Russian coins, you can start with it.

I'm not sure that there is any specific book about Russian counterfeit coins. Post good pictures and measures of the coin you doubt about and we can try to help

I've been browsing plenty of Russian coins on Numista and I'm glad Russian coins are very well represented on Numista.

I was afraid that this was the case that there aren't many resources like that in existance.

I suppose I could ask generally regarding older copper coins: is it normal that an older Kopeck coin might be a little over the normal weight? In my case I have a Pavel I Kopeck from 1800 which is about 0.3 grams over the weight declared on Numista. The diameter and thickness are both exactly as declared on Numista.
Here are some pictures:

Or is it possible that the large Kopecks from the 18th century are considerably under the weight declared on Numista? This Ekaterina II 5 Kopecks for example. I saw the exact one on Ebay but it was about 3 grams underweight so I was too afraid to bid on it.

Thank you in advance!

Yes, the differences in the weight are quite common. +- 10% is absolutely normal. Even for small denomination silver coins of 18th century.

If you are looking for Russian coins, feel free to check my swap list;)

Thank you! I wish I would have asked sooner. I could have possibly grabbed a few large copper coins for a very fair price but now I know.

I took a quick look at the lots of coins you had been selling and the prices seemed extremely fair. I'll be taking a better look when I have a bit of free time! Thank you again.
