@Monéphil Australia 50¢ 1970

Hi, I've been looking at the Numista photos of the Australian 1970 50¢ piece - picture © Monéphil.

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces6178.html

It differs from mine in that the Machin portrait has no eyelashes. Here's mine:

I was wondering when the eyelashes were added. Presumably sometime in 1970 - is the Numista photo a coin from a set perhaps?

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Cheers, MBE :)

Here is a photo of my 1970 Proof Set

Here is a close up of the obverse of the Captain Cook 50 cent proof coin in it

Here is a pic of my Uncirculated version of the same coin in a 2x2

Both coins have got eyelashes.

In regards to Moneyphil's image I think the eyelashes are there, but the photo is just not quite sharp enough to show them.

Interestingly there is some information on this pattern 50c coin regarding eyelashes or missing eyelashes...

Also if you go to this webpage you will also find out a lot of information.

So in this case we can confirm that it is a proof coin?
Thanks Mike, much appreciated.

I'm fairly sure that the quality of the photo on the Numista listing is sufficient to show the detail:

The eyelashes are quite hefty additions and would be seen, I think. I was hoping the contributor could confirm.

I'll have a read of the other information you posted - thank you. :)
My AU example also has the lashes

They could be a standard feature, that is poorly struck or worn off on coins in say VF condition?
I love coins
