What to do with box of Old coins

I am not a coin collector.
I need to decide on what to do with box of old coins that have accumulated over several years.
I have begun sorting and grouping by country. Found some dating back to early 1900s.
There are some from colonial Africa, others from India, Australia and the UK. I suspect some could be quite valuable and others not.
I found that an Australian Florin from 1951 was valued ~ $172.
There are Shillings, pence, new pence, Rupees, annas, pice, and a lot of others
Do I need to sort through and check value of every single one?
Or do I just take the lot into a dealer?
Is there an easy way to get approximate value, eg by Weight?
Welcome to Numista. Unfortunately no, in order to get even close to realistic value, I suggest you do go through what you have. If you just take what you have and sell them by weight you will get bulk prices for them. It also depends on the dealer you take it to as some are better than others. For example, the 1951 Florin you mentioned, exactly what 1951 Florin do you have and how did you determine that value? Sounds grossly overvalued to me. On the other hand, you don't want to get shortchanged if you have others that are indeed valuable. If you go throught them, Numista members will be glad to help you.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, my assumed value was totally wrong. I just googled "florin Australia 1951" and saw it listed on ebay at that price! I see now, its more like $7 or $8. I'm learning fast.
I will continue to sort to try an identify those that could have some value.
some good pictures of of both sides, in lots of six to 10 pieces, would instantly get you a great deal of useful input.

Yeah, have no idea about several with unknown script. Also many small, probably aluminium, ones which may not be worth identifying.
I may just focus on the larger more significant coins. Photos of first group that looked interesting, are attached.
Would be great to know where they belong.
First one in top row has a loop. Not sure if that is original or worthless.

Thanks so much. I was really curios about which countries they were from. Helps get me started on some of the non English ones. Will post more shortly.
you could ask $10 for that lot on ebay.

Never expected them to be worth that much. Now that I able to identify more countries, I may have to sort into groups, worth around $20-$25 to make shipping worthwhile.
Meanwhile, I will be looking up 3 pence from 1911, an old Farthing 1918, 1/4 anna and 1/12 anna.
Will save to my collection here.

I would hold onto those coins. Once you have identified them, sorted them & entered them onto this site you can easily add to them.

Some of these are too easy. You should see the roman letters "Viet Nam" on #2 and look in the Coins catalog yourself.
#3 is another different chinese tourist token. I dont know if anyone collect those. seems there are many.

This will help you become familiar with a variety of world coins so that you can start looking up the easy ones for yourself.http://worldcoingallery.com/Inst-ID/page1.html
That Japanese 500 is a an actual $5 circulating coin. you have $6.50 face value of Japanese currency so far.
Soon you will be able to identify Japanese coins.
the Japanese name of Japan is 日 本 国 you can see it above the flowers on the 500 yen.

Thanks everyone. Exactly what I was looking for, clues on identifying them myself.
Have nearly finished sorting all the countries. May post in groups on ebay to gauge response.
Also entering the older, historic ones in my collection here.
I am a novice but my two cents... Don't sell them unless on very hard times. Coins are so interesting and you will probably never get close to the numismatic value from a dealer. Here in the US, a lot of dealers don't even want to buy unless it's silver or gold and even then they will often give you under melt value. If you really want to sell, I have found ebay, Etsy, and Mercari to be great places to sell and shop. Not trying to persuade just my opinion and agree putting them on here is quite addicting. Happy collecting!

Yes, I'm really impressed with the huge variety of coins and find the inventory process very interesting and quite relaxing.
Very glad in stumbled onto this website. Looking forward to completing the inventory, and hope I'm doing it correct.
Slight improvement from a jumbled pile in a box, they are now in envelopes, by country and continent. Next need to work out a better storage system.

I searched 'Yi Yuan' and was taken to 'Leftovercurrency', which seems quite good. Unfortunately they are in the UK and postage would kill the deal for me.

It's very addictive!!..
I am no expert on the subject of "a box of coins", but I don't think getting retail prices is realistic. I know a neo-collector at work who works the Ebay sellers for USA coins. He never pays near retail. The explanation is that many kids ( 15 to 65) inherit Grandma/pa's box and sells the coins for quick money. I.e. much less than retail. If you can, find collectors on Numista who will buy your offerings. Again, you may not get retail prices, but you may do better than a giveaway some people search for on Ebay. Do not throw in silver coins in the "by the pound" box!!
