Percentage Silver in 18th and 19th Century Afghan and Mughal rupees?

4 posts • viewed 89 times

Does anyone know roughly the percentage of silver contained the Mughal and Afghan rupees of the 1700's-1800's?  I know the composition may vary some through the decades, but I would think there would be some standard amount of silver the rupee would contain.  The weight of the rupee seems to have been relatively stable over these decades.

(NOTE:  For those who would respond:  “Google is your friend.”  I already tried that with no success).

Thanks in advance for your replies.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

According to my knowledge they are pure (100%) silver and don't have any copper or other metals.

Merchants used to check these if they are soft and pure to make a hole and then accept them. That's why many of these coins have holes in them

Maybe you can try to find the source research paper mentioned below the table to get more details
