Hi all,

Gathered much information on this coin. It is from Estonia-Reval, while under Swedish possession, Rundstuck was locals word for Ore. Was informed by Heritage numismatist 'it is indeed very rare' and that 'there are no auction records' available on this coin.
My quest is to locate any reference to this coin being listed and/or sold in auction?

Can you help me? Thank you, Dan

link to an ended auction on ebay for 1670 estonia reval 1 ore.

Good morning,

Thank you for your effort, but link leads to only 'similar' coin... wrong date, different Obverse. I've seen many 'similar' coins dated  'prior to' or 'after' 1671 in numerous auctions, NO AUCTION RECORDS for a '1671 CRS' as represented here.

Still looking!

Thanks, Dan
maybe this 1

Sandy,
They require subscription fee to see info, and I am unable to subscribe to this service. If any member who does subscribe to this service could volunteer the information (mintage and/or est. values)it would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks again,
Dan
Couldn't find it in the KM catalogue.

Maybe it's listed as something else.

SmartOne,
It's in the NGC World Coin Price Catalog listing (KM#40) only as 'rare', in Coins of the Swedish Possessions, again, only as 'rare', and in one other lone catalog page I've received from community, but still only as 'rare'.
(denomination is sometimes listed as '2 Ore' as opposed to '2 Rundstuck' , the locals name for the Ore.)
It's the missing mintage information (if known), and the rarity 'RATING' which I can't find.
Thanks for help,
Dan
hope this is the right one.

Tony,
The coin is listed under 'Reval' KM#40 in that catalog. Do you happen to know title, author, pub. date of catalog?
Thanks,
Dan

I'll try and find out for you.
Thanks,
Just received it in tonight's mail. So far, it's the thinnest coin I've collected. I should be that thin. LOL

Its taken out from that book
standard catalof of world coins 1600-1700
http://ebookee.org/Krause-Standard-Catalog-of-World-Coins-1601-1700_955313.html
but in there it also just says rare on your coin.

Curious...
Does the absence of auction records, rarity attribute, or mintage usually increase or decrease perceived value of coin?
Thanks to all for your attention and efforts.

I would guess that Heritage Auctions may be able to help. Although I'm sure they would expect a fee or a sales commision in return for a valuation they ought at least to be able to give you an indication of previous auction returns and it's rarity.

It is not uncommon when sales results are not available on the Web for a specific year and mint of 17th century coins, especially rarer ones. In these cases I usually guide myself with results of sales of similar coins of neighboring years to set up a starting price at an auction and let the bidders decide on the final price.
You may probably find guidance here
http://www.mcsearch.info/search.html?search=similar%3A210662
and if you wish to sell, put it e.g. on eBay with good pictures and a starting price of $120-$150 and pointing out in the description that the coin is unpriced and described as rare in the Krause catalog. If the coin is indeed rare, you might get the price several times higher than the starting price.
I collect coins and tokens which circulated in Africa from 18th century to 2000. I sell about 7000 illustrated world coins from http://www.avscoins.com.

One of the Senior Numismatists from Heritage told me, 'It is indeed rare', and 'There are no auction records for this coin to use as guide for value.'

Audrey...

I researched Heritage past auctions for 'similar' coin denominations, 'around' the same date (1666-1673), using alternate origins of Estonia, Reval, and Sweden. Nothing came up.
Can you suggest one or two alternate rare coin auction houses that would allow me to search their archives without subscription fees?

Thank you both,
Dan
It's been a long time since I needed the services of the top tier so my info. may be somewhat out of date. I can't think of any prominent Swedish auction houses, perhaps one of our Scandinavian members might be able to help in that direction.

The most reputable is probably Spinks and Sons in London. I checked their auction archive and while you need to register there doesn't appear to be any subscription fees.

My feeling is that the dearth of information is a sure indication that you have a genuine rarity.

If you can't track down any auction results the next step would be specialised books and catalogs. There tend to be expensive but your local library should be able to request one for you once you track them down. As a last resort you could try the .edu websites although much of the information is poorly indexed and usually in pdf format.

You could also try Baldwin´s
http://www.baldwin.co.uk/
- they are also free and have experts for several different countries. Oh and don´t expect your coin to be worth millions. I knew a collector in Germany that had a rare coin from the Italian states in Au55 with a mintage of only 25 coins, and the value of his coin was around €7500. Coins from the US though with mintages of 100,000 or so are usually worth a lot more. Coins that are from countries that are collected more than others will be worth more.

Good suggestions. Will research and check all out. Thanks.
No great windfall expected on this end.
My fortunes lie in the family I was born into, and their memories.

Hi all,
I received email from Spinks. They feel the coin is worth several hundred dollars. The operative word is 'several'. It means an indefinite number more than two and fewer than many. I guess they too are unable to offer a more definitive estimate.
If this subject has run it's course, to all, enjoy the upcoming holiday season.
